Yeah, I've been taught that at school. This must a pretty important day for Polish people, especially the elder people. Is there any official commemoration or something?

yes, at 5pm. (W - hour) there is an alarm, reminded start of uprising, people are standing at attention on the streets (usually)etc. and we have some pageant with this. it's important day for all people who had participation in it, but also for young people (scouts etc).
